Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis and the Illinois Supreme Court have announced the appointment of Maximino Ortiz as the new Marshal of the Supreme Court. His appointment is effective September 1, 2025.
The Illinois Supreme Court contracted with the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) to conduct a national search for the position of Marshal, and the Court is grateful for their assistance. The Court considers judicial security to be a matter of extreme importance due to increased threats to the judiciary. The Marshal of the Supreme Court will work closely with the Supreme Court Committee on Judicial Security and Safety (Committee). The Committee provides the Court with developments and recommendations related to the judicial threat environment and protective operations, intelligence, and information.
“Judicial security has changed rapidly in recent years, “ Chief Justice Theis said. “My colleagues and I have every confidence that Marshal Ortiz will embrace this opportunity to use his skills to keep the Supreme Court Marshal’s Office at the forefront of court safety.”
Marshal Ortiz has served as a Court Marshal for the Supreme Court since 2017, handling security and executive protection for the Court. He previously served as an officer in the Chicago Police Department (CPD) from 1991 to 2017, where he retired after a decorated career.
“I would like to thank the Supreme Court for this appointment,” Marshal Ortiz said. “I look forward to working with the other marshals and law enforcement throughout Illinois to keep judges, court staff and court users safe in order to continue the mission of safely allowing equal access to justice for all.”
Marshal Ortiz studied criminal justice at Richard J. Daley College and served a successful three-year stint in the U.S. Army, where he was honorably discharged.
