Illinois Supreme Court Hosts Remote Bar Admission
Ceremony for 1,590 New Admittees

January 27, 2021

The Illinois Supreme Court hosted a virtual bar admission ceremony for 1,590 new attorneys on Thursday, January 14. Justice Rita B. Garman presided from Springfield. Supreme Court Clerk Carolyn Taft Grosboll made the motion for admission of the candidates and Court Research Director John Robinson seconded the motion. All of the candidates sworn in passed the Illinois State Bar Examination and a required ethics examination and were certified by the Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness.

Justice Garman complimented the class for reaching the professional milestone despite the many roadblocks caused by COVID-19.

"The pandemic brought with it more questions than answers," Justice Garman said. "Through it all, and an online exam, you've weathered the storm and an experience no one here has experienced before or wants to experience again. I applaud you."

The number of admittees for each district is:

  • First District: 1,240
  • Second District: 184
  • Third District: 55
  • Fourth District: 51
  • Fifth District: 60
