What is your favorite animal, and why?
I love all animals, but my favorite animal is dogs. Nothing can beat a canine companion for loyalty, affection and pure exuberance for the simple pleasures of life.
What is your favorite article of clothing that you own? Where did you get it, and how long have you had it?
I have a coat that is heated by a drill battery. I love that thing. That coat has been a lifesaver camping with my family, walking the dog in the winter, and watching soccer games in December.
Think of the best teacher you’ve ever had. What subject did they teach, and what made them special?
My third-grade teacher, Mrs. Fuoss, was the best teacher ever. She is one of those people who just innately understands children. For a variety of reasons, I had a difficult year and got into a fair amount of trouble. Mrs. Fuoss hung in there with me, always finding creative opportunities for me to succeed.
Can you share a memorable experience prior to becoming a judge that influenced your perspective of the legal system?
While in high school, I witnessed a bad automobile accident. I was deposed and later testified at trial. At my deposition, the plaintiff’s attorney asked some questions that were inappropriate and offensive, and he did not ask other relevant questions that may have helped his case. I remember coming away from the experience thinking that if I was an attorney I could do a way better job than that guy and that realization solidified my career path.
