Justice Joy V. Cunningham and the Illinois Supreme Court have announced the appointment of Daniel Naranjo as a judge in the Thirteenth Subcircuit of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
Mr. Naranjo is being appointed to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Shannon P. O’Malley. Mr. Naranjo appointment is effective June 5, 2025, and will conclude on December 7, 2026.
Mr. Naranjo has served in the Office of the Cook County Public Defender as an Assistant Public Defender since 2000, most recently as a member of the Multiple Defendant Division where he represented individuals charged in multiple offender felony cases. He previously served in the Felony Trial Division from 2008 to 2020, handling a large volume of felony matters ranging from retail theft to first degree murder cases. Prior to this, from 2000 to 2008, he oversaw domestic violence, traffic, and misdemeanor cases.
Mr. Naranjo earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law.
His professional affiliations include the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois, where he served on the Judicial Evaluation Committee and works on the JD Mentors program, the Puerto Rican Bar Association, where he serves on the Judicial Evaluation Committee, and the Northwest Suburban Bar Association. Mr. Naranjo is a member of the Barrington Rotary Club and coaches the first ever Barrington High School Mock Trial team.
