The First District Illinois Appellate Court – 6th
Division heard oral arguments in one case at Loyola University School of Law in Chicago on April 14.
Law students listened to arguments by attorneys in the case of People v. Breseman. A Q&A with Appellate Justices Sanjay Tailor, Celia Gamrath, and Carl Walker followed oral arguments.
“The recent court session held by the justices on campus was an extraordinary experience for the Loyola community. Events like this are essential—they break down the mystery of courtroom procedures and give students, faculty, and staff a rare, firsthand look at our legal system in action. The post-session Q&A was particularly moving, as the justices shared how they approach each case with a deep sense of humanity, seeing individuals beyond their roles as victims or perpetrators,” said Tracy Bradley, Directory of Technology Services for Loyola. “In a time marked by political uncertainty and concern for justice, this event offered a much-needed breath of fresh air. It reminded us that those entrusted with upholding the law are also thoughtful, lifelong learners, committed to growth and the betterment of society.”
In recent years, the Supreme and Appellate Courts have held oral arguments in other locations in Illinois to raise awareness of the judicial branch and of the important role the court system has in interpreting state laws. This outreach into various communities in Illinois has been a tremendous success, particularly with students who gain a better understanding of state civics.
