11/29/2022

The bar admission ceremony for the 1,342 new attorneys who passed the July 2022 Bar Exam was held virtually on Thursday, November 17. Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis presided over the ceremony and administered the oath to the new admittees.

“Congratulations,” Chief Justice Theis told the new attorneys. “And now is your chance to set the world on fire with justice.”

Justice Anne M. Burke made the motion to admit the class and Justice Robert L. Carter seconded the motion. Both Justice Burke and Justice Carter are retiring from the Court next month.

All of the candidates sworn-in passed the Illinois State Bar Examination and a required ethics examination and were certified by the Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness.

The number of admittees for each district is as follows:

  • First District: 1,094
  • Second District: 72
  • Third District: 80
  • Fourth District: 43
  • Fifth District: 53

The new attorneys sworn in at the bar admission ceremony will bring the total number of licensed attorneys in Illinois to approximately 97,000.
