Illinois judges receive recognition and awards

Illinois judges are increasingly being recognized for their dedicated work in courtrooms throughout the state. Here are some of the recent honors received by Illinois judges:

  • Illinois Supreme Court Justices P. Scott Neville and Lisa Holder White were honored on August 10, 2022, by Illinois Judicial Council at their 40th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony in Chicago. Justice Holder White was the recipient of the Charles Freeman Pioneer in Justice Award for becoming the state's first female African American Supreme Court Justice, while Justice Neville had an award of merit, the "P. Scott Neville, Jr. Meritorious Award", named in his honor for his tireless pursuit of justice and his contributions to the community.
  • 14th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Carol Pentuic was honored on August 22, 2022, by the City of Rock Island as the recipient of their Professional Citizen of the Year award at a city council meeting. Judge Pentuic received the award for her work with the Rock Island County Eviction Diversion Program.
  • Cook County Circuit Judge Cecilia Horan was one of the female attorneys honored on July 20, 2022, at the 3rd Annual Salute! Top Women in Law event celebrating influential women in the law and in a special commemorative issue of Chicago Lawyer.
  • Third Judicial Circuit Court Judge Sarah Smith, who is a Colonel and the State Judge Advocate of the Illinois Army National Guard, was honored this month as one of four nationwide recipients of the 2022 Federally Employed Women (FEW) Military Meritorious Award for her significant contributions to the service and the nation by promoting the tenets of civil/human rights, equal opportunity, and public service.
