Robert J. Steigmann, born in December 1944, was raised in Chicago. He received two degrees from the University of Illinois, a B.S. in 1965 and a J.D. in 1968. From 1968 to 1976, he was a staff attorney with the Legislative Reference Bureau and an Assistant State's Attorney in Sangamon and Champaign counties. He was elected a judge of the Circuit Court in 1976 and assigned to the Appellate Court in July 1989. In November 1994, he was elected to the Appellate Court. Judge Steigmann has been a frequent lecturer and writer on criminal law, criminal procedure, juvenile law and rules of evidence. He also is co-author with Professor Michael Graham of Illinois Evidentiary Foundations (2d ed.) (Michie 1997) and the author of the three-volume treatise, Illinois Evidence Manual (3d ed.) (Lawyers Co-op 1995). He also is a faculty member of the New York University Law School Institute of Judicial Administration and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Illinois College of Law. Judge Steigmann, a resident of Urbana, is married and has two children. His son, Michael, is an attorney practicing in Chicago.
