John J. Stamos

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice


John J. Stamos was born January 30, 1924 in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the European theater of operations from 1943 to 1945. He attended DePaul University College of Law, receiving an LL.B. degree in 1948, and was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1949. He was assistant corporation counsel for the city of Chicago and assistant state’s attorney of Cook County; he served as chief of the Criminal Division of the Cook County state’s attorney office and was appointed state’s attorney of Cook County in 1966. He was elected to the first district appellate court in 1968 and served in that position until his appointment to the Illinois supreme court in 1988. Justice Stamos is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the National District Attorneys’ Association, the Professional Achievement Award from the Illinois State’s Attorneys’ Association and the Liberty Bell Award from the Federal Bar Association.
