James D. Heiple

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice

Former Supreme Court Justice James D. HeipleJames D. Heiple was born in Peoria on Sept. 13,1933, the descendant of several pioneer Illinois families. Graduating from law school at age 23, he joined his father and brother in the family law firm of Heiple & Heiple. From 1957 to 1970, he engaged in the general practice of law with offices in Washington and Pekin. While engaged in general law practice, he also served as an Appellate Law Clerk, a Public Defender and a Special Master in Chancery. Further business interests have included partnership in an insurance agency corporation, service as a bank officer, director of two banks and a farm owner and manager. Justice Heiple was elected to the Circuit Court in 1970, to the Appellate Court in 1980 and to the Supreme Court in 1990. He graduated from Bradley University with a B.S. degree, from the University of Louisville with a J.D. degree and from the University of Virginia with a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree. His term on the Supreme Court ended December 3, 2000.
