Marvin F. Burt

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice

Justice Burt was born in Freeport, Illinois, November 20, 1905. He graduate from Freeport High School, received an A.B. degree from Harvard University in 1928, and received his law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1931. Justice Burt practiced law in Freeport beginning in 1931. He was formerly City Attorney of Freeport and Master in Chancery of Circuit Court of Stephenson County. He served four terms as a State Representative and was elected State Senator in November 1952, and re-elected in November 1956. He was elected Circuit Judge, Fifteenth Circuit, in 1960. Justice Burt was appointed to the Supreme Court of Illinois in October 1969. He succeeded Justice Roy J. Solfisburg Jr., and was succeeded by Justice Charles H. Davis in 1970. He was affiliated with the Republican party. He married Helen Woodruff and had two children, a son and daughter.
