Benjamin K. Sheldon

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice


Benjamin K. Sheldon was born on April 15, 1811 in New Marlboro, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. He received his A.B. from Williams College in 1831, and his LL.B. from Yale in 1836. He served as a Circuit Court Judge, first in the 6th District from 1848 - 1851, and then in the 14th District from 1851 until his election to the Illinois Supreme Court on August 8, 1870. While on the high court he served as chief justice three times, in 1876, 1883, and 1887. Judge Sheldon left the court on June 4, 1888; and he died on April 13, 1897 in Rockford, Illinois.
