Jesse J. Phillips

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice


Jesse J. Phillips was born on May 22, 1837 in Montgomery County. He served in the 9th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War, and was wounded at Shiloh. By the end of the war he had risen to the rank of Brigadier-General. He served as Circuit Court Judge in the 5th District from June 16, 1879 until he joined the Illinois Supreme Court on June 5, 1893. He remained on the high court until his death on February 2, 1901, during which time he served once as chief justice in 1897.
