William P. Foster

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice

William P. Foster was born in Virginia in the late 18th century. Less than three weeks after becoming an Illinois citizen, and with no experience as a lawyer, he was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court on October 9, 1818, where he remained until his resignation July 7, 1819. He was assigned, but never presided over, the Wabash Circuit Court. After his resignation from the high court, he moved to Virginia.
