John T. Culbertson

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice


John T. Culbertson, Jr. was born in Delavan, Illinois on August 7, 1891. He attended and graduated from Delavan High School in 1909 and is a graduate of the Law School of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, graduating in 1913. He was admitted to the Bar of Illinois in 1913 and to the Bar of Missouri in 1914. He was elected County Judge of Tazewell County, Illinois in 1930 and served a four year term. He was elected Circuit Judge of the Tenth Judicial Circuit in 1934 and served continuously until 1968. He was appointed to the Fourth District Appellate Court in 1939 and served there until 1964. He served on the Third District Appellate Court in 1964 and again in 1968. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Illinois in October 1969. He succeeded Justice Ray I. Klingbiel, and was succeeded by Justice Howard C. Ryan. He married Helen E. Read of Bloomington, Illinois in 1915 and they had one daughter. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Shrine, Elks, and Rotary.
