James H. Cartwright

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice

James H. Cartwright was born at Maquoketa, Iowa Territory, December 1, 1842. He received his education at Mt. Morris Seminary and the University of Michigan. He served as a volunteer during the Civil War and was mustered out with the rank of captain. He was elected Judge of the Circuit Court in 1888, re-elected in 1891 and assigned to the Appellate Bench for the second Appellate District. He was elected Judge of the Supreme Court in 1895 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Justice Bailey and was re-elected in 1897 and 1915. He died on May 18, 1924 in Oregon, Illinois.
