Corydon Beckwith

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice

Corydon Beckwith was born in Vermont in 1823. He was educated in Providence, Rhode Island, and Brentham, Massachusetts, and studied law at St. Albans, Vermont. He was admitted to the Vermont bar in 1844, and to the Maryland bar two years later. In 1847 he commenced practice in St. Albans, and remained there until 1853, when he moved to Chicago. Illinois Governor Yates appointed him to a brief term on the Illinois Supreme Court, from January 1864 - June 1864. Judge Beckwith, who died on August 18, 1890, in Chicago, is widely regarded as one of the greatest jurists of his time.
