Joseph M. Bailey

Previous Illinois Supreme Court Justice

Joseph M. Bailey was born on June 22, 1853, in Middlebury, New York. He was educated in Rochester, where he received his B.A. in 1854. Judge Bailey was a trustee of the University of Chicago. He served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1866 - 1870, and served as a Circuit Court judge for the 13th judicial district from 1877 - 1888, when he was elected to the Illinois Supreme Court. He served as a member of the Supreme Court from June 4, 1888 until his death on November 16, 1895, in Freeport, Illinois. During his term, he served as Chief Justice from June, 1892 - June, 1893.
